Bus Bridge and Green Line Cancellation Alert: Free buses replace trains between 24th Street/Mission and Daly City stations June 1-2
On the weekend of June 1-2, BART crews will be making trackway improvements and managing vegetation that could impact service between 24th Street/Mission and Daly City stations. To ensure a safe workspace for the project team, free buses will replace trains from 24th Street/Mission to Daly City. Riders can expect delays of up to 30 minutes on the work weekend.
Key service impacts the weekend of June 1-2:
*Green Line service cancelled.
*No Red Line service from Millbrae to Daly City. Yellow Line trains will serve that portion of the system with 20-minute headways all weekend.
*Yellow, Blue, and Red lines will turnback at 24th Street/Mission Station.
*SamTrans providing direct bus service between 24th Street/Mission and Daly City.
*Muni providing hopper bus service between 24th Street/Mission, Glen Park, Balboa, and Daly City stations.
*Glen Park and Balboa Park stations to be closed except for bus service.
*The last regularly scheduled northbound departure from Millbrae to Daly City will be cancelled. The last northbound departure from Millbrae will be at 11:40pm and SFO at 11:47pm
The work team will make the most of its time in the closed trackway. Crews will replace aging rail, install new equipment to support the traction power system, enhance tunnel lighting, and advance other key improvements. The equipment being replaced is decades old and has outlived its design life. Riders will enjoy a smoother, safer, more reliable, and quieter ride once the projects are complete.
This upcoming work is part of BART’s overall effort to improve the safety and reliability of the 131-mile, 50 station system. There are now more rebuilding projects happening across BART than at any point in its 50-year history. Bay Fair Station: parking lot impacts for repaving work in July and August 2024
UPDATE: Thursday, August 1
On Saturday August 3rd and Sunday August 4th only, Bus Aisle A and the Passenger Loading Zone will be closed for repaving. See directions and second map below for temporary locations. Signage will be provided at the station to direct passengers.
Passengers meeting their rides can find the temporary location by crossing the bus lane to the regular loading zone location, crossing the passenger loading zone lane, and continuing straight ahead on the sidewalk. The temporary zone will be in the parking lot to the right. Those needing ramps can cross at the parking access road crosswalk. Drivers will be directed to this location with signage.
Bus Aisle A will be closed, and buses will be relocated as follows, using the bus stop numbers posted at each stop:

The surface parking lot on the eastside of Bay Fair Station will be repaved in phases from Monday, July 15, 2024 to Friday, August 9, 2024. Daily Fee parking will still be available for customers (see map).
Phase 1 work will begin Monday, July 15, 2024 and is expected to be complete by Friday, July 25, 2024.
Phase 2 work will begin on Monday, July 29, 2024 and is expected to be complete by Friday, August 9, 2024.
Repaving work will also take place on two consecutive weekends. Crews will close the existing reserve parking lot and the adjacent access road to repair existing pavement on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28, 2024. The parking lot is expected to be reopened by Monday, July 29, 2024.
On Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4, 2024 crews will close bus bay aisle A and the passenger drop off area. The bus bay and passenger drop off area will be reopened by Monday, August 5, 2024.
Temporary signage and traffic cones will be installed to guide riders to open parking spaces. At no time during this work will the entire parking lot be closed. Sidewalk and pedestrian access to the station will remain open during the construction.

Entrance Closure Alert: Market and Beale streets entrance at Embarcadero Station to close 9/5 for canopy work
On Tuesday, September 5th the Embarcadero Station entrance at Market and Beale streets will be closed for up to eight months to build a new canopy. The new canopy will protect our escalator at this entrance from the elements to help limit breakdowns.
While this entrance is closed, patrons will still be able to use one of the other entrances to the station, including the Market and Pine entrance across the street.
Over the next 4-5 years BART will construct 16 canopies on Market Street over downtown station entrances. As part of a separate project, new escalators will be installed at each of these locations following the canopy construction. In addition to protecting new escalators, the canopies will improve safety and reduce station maintenance costs.

On Monday, April 29, 2024 the Civic Center entrance at Market and 7th streets (on the north side of Market Street) will be closed for up to eight months for the construction of a new canopy.
While this entrance is closed, patrons will still be able to use one of the other entrances to the station. Entrances open during construction include one directly across Market Street at 7th Street as well as Market and Leavenworth streets.

Accessible Fare Gate Replacement at Civic Center Station
April 1, 2024 Update
On April 1st, crews finished installation and put into service the next generation fare gate at the elevator entrance of the Civic Center platform.
Posted March 22, 2024:
BART will replace the existing accessible fare gate near the elevator on the platform level of Civic Center Station with a new Next Generation Fare Gate. The work is set to begin March 22, 2024 and is expected to be completed by April 5, 2024. During the work, the elevator will remain open and there will be an accessible path for riders, but it will require temporary new tap in/tap out procedures (see below).
Later this summer, BART will replace all the fare gates on the concourse level of Civic Center Station.

Our “Must Tap” Policy During Construction
During construction, riders will not be able to tap their Clipper card at the faregate in front of the elevator on the platform. All riders using the elevator will need to tap in and out of the station at the concourse level.
To leave Civic Center Station:
- riders will exit the train at the platform level;
- take the elevator up to the concourse level;
- go to the Station Agent booth nearest the elevator;
- ask the Station Agent to enter the paid area;
- have the Station Agent tap the rider's Clipper card at the accessible fare gate to exit.
To enter Civic Center Station:
- riders will be required to tap a Clipper card at the concourse-level accessible fare gate near the Station Agent’s booth closest to the elevator;
- enter through the concourse-level accessible fare gate and take the elevator down to the platform.
During construction BART will provide an accessible pathway for riders through the construction area. Signs will be prominently displayed to help guide riders.

Puppies rescued during stolen vehicle arrest
BART PD’s proactive enforcement efforts to combat vehicle crimes at Coliseum Station resulted in an arrest and the rescue of several young puppies who were found in a stolen vehicle. BART PD officers working as part of our Strategic Response Team in collaboration with the Alameda County Regional Auto Theft Task Force Tuesday afternoon spotted a vehicle that was reported stolen out of Fremont being driven through the Coliseum Station parking lot. Officers attempted to make a stop, but the suspect fled in the vehicle. During a short pursuit a dog fled from the stolen vehicle through an open window. Eventually 28-year-old Courtney Taylor of Oakland stopped the vehicle and was taken into custody. Multiple puppies were found in the vehicle and have been turned over to Oakland Animal Control. A search was conducted and the dog who fled from the vehicle was not located. Taylor was arrested in connection with eight felony and misdemeanor charges and has been booked into Santa Rita Jail.


Single Tracking that had been scheduled between North Berkeley and El Cerrito Plaza on Sunday, January 26 has been postponed

The vegetation management work that had been planned between North Berkeley and El Cerrito Plaza for Sunday, January 26 has been postponed. A new date has not yet been finalized. BART will now offer normal Sunday service on January 26.
On Sunday, January 26, a work team will be deployed in the trackway between North Berkeley and El Cerrito Plaza stations to manage vegetation that could pose a hazard to service. To ensure the work can be done safely, service through the project area will be reduced from two tracks to one at between those two stations. Riders in the area should expect delays of 20-25 minutes on those work dates. BART will also cancel Red Line service for the day. Richmond riders wanting to travel transbay can board an Orange Line train and transfer to a Yellow Line train at MacArthur Station. A shuttle train will operate between SFO and Millbrae stations all day.
Single Tracking Alert: Service to be reduced to one track between Balboa Park and Daly City on Sunday, April 13
On Sunday, April 13, BART workers will replace a segment of third rail between Balboa Park and Daly City stations. The third rail provides electricity to our trains. To ensure the work can be done safely, service through the project area will be reduced from two tracks to one between those two stations. Riders in the area should expect delays of 15-20 minutes.
BART will not run Red Line trains all day on April 13. Richmond riders who want to travel transbay can take an Orange Line (Richmond-Berryessa/North San Jose) train and transfer at MacArthur Station to a Yellow Line (Antioch-SFO) train. Green Line trains will run from Berryessa/North San Jose to 24th Street/Mission Station. Riders wishing to continue their trip to Daly City can transfer to a Blue Line (Dublin/Pleasanton-Daly City) train. Additionally, a shuttle train will operate between SFO and Millbrae stations.
Bay Area transit agencies coordinate the Big Sync to unify schedule changes
Bay Area transit agencies are now syncing schedules in a whole new way with a focus on improving transfers between systems and making schedule changes at the same time. Transit riders who use more than one system will see a variety of improvements across the Bay Area this month, saving some riders up to 16 minutes on their trips.
Many Bay Area transit agencies are rolling out new schedules mid-January in coordination with each other and have now aligned the timing of schedule changes twice each year, once in summer (mid-August) and once in winter (mid-January). Since 2022, the number of transit agencies with full schedule change alignment (changing schedules at the same time in August and January) has increased from four to 20 – a 400% increase.
Advancing schedule change alignment is a key priority for Bay Area transit general managers who meet on a weekly basis to make transit more rider-focused and efficient.
The Big Sync reduces travel time
Agencies meet several months in advance of each schedule change to share planned changes and to look for opportunities to improve transfers.
Specific service coordination efforts for January include:
- BART is timing its late evening Millbrae service that runs every 15 minutes to line up with Caltrain’s service every 30 minutes. In September 2024, Caltrain’s new electric service schedule significantly improved transfer times. Both agencies have coordinated on a helpful transfer timetable to show which trains connect and their transfer wait times.
- VTA is making changes to match both BART’s and Caltrain’s schedule changes to ensure timed transfers are maintained at various locations across the South Bay and Peninsula.
- In San Francisco, Muni is restoring the 30X Marina Express bus for two morning trips at 7:15am and 7:45am, beginning in February. Morning commuters will be able to enjoy a fast, direct connection from the Marina to BART and the Transbay Center connecting to various bus lines.
- For transit riders traveling during the morning commute from Napa County’s Redwood Park n Ride on the Napa Valley Transportation Authority’s bus 29 to El Cerrito del Norte Station to catch the Red Line into San Francisco between 5:30am and 8am, their trips will be six minutes faster on average and up to 16 minutes faster.
- For transit riders returning home on their evening commute from the San Rafael Transit Center in Marin County to the Richmond Parkway Transit Center in Contra Costa County between 3pm and 6:30pm on the Golden Gate Transit #580 or #580X and the AC Transit #76 (transferring at Cutting Blvd and Harbour), their trips will be 5 minutes and 40 seconds faster on average and up to 16 minutes faster.
- Transit riders departing the Salesforce Transit Center between 9pm and midnight on the Golden Gate Transit bus 130 and the Marin Transit bus 35 (transferring at the San Rafael Transit Center), will arrive at the Canal Area of San Rafael (Kerner and Larkspur) 15 minutes faster.
“These are examples of how Bay Area transit agencies are acting as one network to better serve the Bay Area to help reduce traffic and improve the quality of service,” said Alicia Trost, Chief Communications Officer at BART. “Making transit faster than driving a car and easier to navigate is possible when the Bay Area invests in transit and we all work together.”
Bay Area Transit in 2025 is anything but business as usual
Riding transit will be more affordable in 2025 as Bay Area transit agencies are working with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission on the upcoming Next Generation of Clipper, which will give transit riders free or discounted transfers between systems. A unified approach to maps and directional signs across the region is also being tested and expanded. And agencies are participating in Clipper BayPass to test the concept of a prepaid unlimited transit pass and fare capping. Clipper BayPass is being sold to interested organizations who would like to offer their employees an all-you-can-ride transit. These programs will help increase transit ridership and will help meet local and state climate goals.
Rebuilt escalator and new canopy open at Market St. stations
Two projects transforming BART entrances along Market Street marked significant progress as May gave way to June.
The Escalator Replacement Project opened a completely rebuilt escalator at Embarcadero Station on May 31, 2024, connecting the platform to the concourse level near the Beale St. entrance. Crews are set to rebuild another platform escalator at the other end of the station next.

Meantime, two crews farther down Market Street are advancing as well. Workers rebuilding platform escalators at both Civic Center and Powell Street stations are approaching the finishing line.
Not to be outdone, the Canopy Project completed a new canopy above an entrance at Montgomery Street Station the evening before the escalator at Embarcadero was opened. The new canopy at the entrance near Sutter St. contributes to better security and will provide protection to a new escalator when the unit at that entrance is rebuilt.

Together, the Canopy and Escalator Rebuilding projects are improving the safety and cleanliness of entrances along Market St, BART’s most heavily used stations.
