BART's Station Modernization Program supports improved station access, safety, and customer experience. Our efforts advance goals identified in documents adopted by BART’s Board of Directors, like the Strategic Plan and Station Access Policy and Performance Measures by using BART’s Station Experience Design Guidelines and Multimodal Access Design Guidelines. Read about the projects below and find a list of completed projects at the bottom of this page.
Downtown Berkeley Station Modernization
BART has developed a long-term vision for the station which includes making changes to the concourse and platform. This effort is in coordination with the completed redesign of the street-level plaza.
Lake Merritt Plaza Upgrade
San Francisco Station Escalator Replacement

The Market Street Escalators Renovation Project will install and replace escalators at Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell and Civic Center Stations. Of the escalators to be replaced, 22 are street to concourse level and 18 connect concourse with station platforms. Additionally, a street level escalator at Civic Center Station will be installed at the entrance nearest to the Orpheum Theatre which currently has only stairs.
San Francisco Station Canopy Project
On January 23, 2020, the BART Board of Directors approved a contract to construct 19 canopies over entrances at BART stations along Market St. in downtown San Francisco. This is in addition to two canopies previously constructed under a pilot project for a total of 21 canopies.
The canopies will not only protect new escalators being installed from the wear and tear of elements like rain and wind-swept debris, but they will provide an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed. The added protection from the existing canopy in Oakland has reduced escalator down time by about 30%.
Walnut Creek Station Modernization / TOD Access and Underpass Safety Improvements

BART is planning for improvements to Walnut Creek Station that will support improved station access, safety, and customer experience.
Coliseum Station Modernization

As part of our Station Modernization effort, BART completed its modernization project at Coliseum Station in June 2016 in anticipation of future land use development and airport growth. The goal of the project was to develop and prioritize potential station improvements to upgrade and modernize the station’s function, safety and security, capacity, sustainability, appearance, and improve the customer experience. BART partnered with the City and AC Transit to develop a station area vision that will inform the modernization work.
The Plan positioned BART to partner and seek funding for implementation.
Civic Center Station Modernization

BART has completed the Civic Center Modernization Plan, which will invest resources into the existing core stations and surrounding areas to support transit ridership and enhance the quality of life around the stations. The goal of the project is to develop and prioritize potential station improvements to upgrade and modernize the station’s function, safety and security, capacity, sustainability, appearance, and improve the customer experience.
The Plan will position BART to partner and to seek funding for implementation.
Embarcadero-Montgomery Stations: Capacity and Modernization Implementation Plan

BART is working to improve the capacity of BART’s two busiest stations – Embarcadero and Montgomery. BART has conducted several studies to develop project concepts to expand station capacity. In addition, BART has identified modernization needs to improve station functionality, safety, access, appearance, and the overall customer experience. Understanding the concerns of stakeholders and BART riders has been central to the planning process. BART has developed an implementation and phasing plan to move forward with the most effective near-term improvements as well as potential future projects to accommodate the increasing number of riders and modernize the stations. These efforts are vital to support the continuing growth of the region and its transit network.
