To improve connectivity and broadband internet services for BART stations and surrounding communities, hundreds of strands of fiber optics will be installed along all BART and certain SFMTA Rights-of-Way. These cables will support critical operations and expand BART’s current fiber optic licensing business to help generate additional revenue for BART and SFMTA through dark and lit fiber options, support for carrier hotels and connectivity to 40+ data centers.
The more than 2,000 tech companies in the Silicon Valley market will be provided with enhanced and reliable connectivity through nearly 200 miles of fiber optic cabling. The massive backbone will provide more than 60% of the Bay Area with access to high-speed fiber, connecting the otherwise highly-constrained cities of San Francisco and Oakland.
This project will be completed in 2023. BART has prioritzed the Transbay Tube as the first segment for fiber deployment as it will provide much needed additional fiber connectivity between San Francisco and Oakland, a route that is otherwise highly constrained.
