Many of BART’s sustainability goals support the use of U. S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) Green Building Rating System guidelines for building construction and operations. LEED™ guidelines are applied to as many BART projects as possible with some projects applying for certification.

Location and Transportation: The building is less than a half mile, or walking distance, from various uses including food, retail, services, civic and community facilities, and public transportation.
Water: The building uses water-efficient fixtures, fittings, and appliances that minimize indoor water consumption by over 40%.
Energy and Atmosphere: Excessive energy use is reduced by an efficient HVAC system, LED lights, lighting controls, and window film.
Materials and Resources: The building has dedicated areas for the collection and storage of recyclable and compostable materials.
Indoor Environmental Quality: At the time of construction, floorplans were designed to maximize building occupants’ access to daylight and quality views.

Hayward Maintenance Complex Central Warehouse

Site: Bicycle racks and lockers are provided along with shower facilities to encourage active transportation.
Building Systems: The energy reduction strategies include efficient HVAC, lighting, and building envelope design, which reduce energy consumption over 30%.
Water: Water efficient fixtures reduce indoor water consumption over 25%
Materials: 99% of construction waste was diverted from landfills.
Indoor Environment Quality: Adjustable lighting and thermal system controls are available to over 80% of individual and shared occupant spaces.

Envision
Milpitas and Berryessa Stations
On June 13, 2020, BART and Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) opened the Milpitas and Berryessa/North San José stations for passenger service. VTA built and owns the extension and the two new transit centers, while BART maintains and operates the train system. Sustainability is a core aspect in the design of the stations and supporting infrastructure. VTA’s Berryessa Transit Center was awarded the Envision Platinum Award by The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure’s (ISI) awards program.
Envision provides a blueprint for sustainable infrastructure. To achieve a Platinum award, a project must demonstrate that it delivers a heightened range of environmental, social, and economic benefits to the project implementor and surrounding communities.
