Rider guide for BART 5am start of service
Beginning on February 11, 2019, BART's start of service will shift from 4 am to 5 am systemwide for a massive project that will seismically retrofit the Transbay Tube.
About 2,900 riders enter our system in that first hour of service.
BART conducted extensive outreach this past spring which included surveys, in-station outreach, multilingual media ads, community presentations, and meetings with airport employees, hospitality and service workers, business owners and unions. The rider input helped guide the development of a robust alternative bus service plan for the 4 am hour, called the Early Bird Express.
Details about the Early Bird Express can be found here, complete with bus routes, station-specific guides, payment and parking information.
In addition to the 5am opening, other major BART schedule changes beginning February 11, 2019 will impact Sunday and weekday night riders. Read about all of the changes here.
5am Train Plan
Once the schedule change takes effect, end of the line trains will begin around 5 am, Trains will also for the first time on weekdays begin around 5 am from midline stations (Concord, South Hayward and Daly City) to ramp up the start of service more quickly. All early morning trains will be long with the first East Bay train arriving at Embarcadero Station at 5:35 am. Below is a station by station list of the first trains in all directions. Download the first trains list here.
Additional in-station outreach will take place from December 2018 through February 2019 to inform riders about the start of service change and alternative bus service. See outreach schedule below:
