Entrance Closure Alert: Civic Center Station entrance at 7th and Market to close for 4 weeks starting 5/8/23 for escalator upgrade

On Monday, May 8th, 2023, our contractor will begin work to upgrade escalator components at Civic Center Station at the Market and 7th Street entrance. This entrance on the south side of the station is where an existing canopy protects the escalator from the elements. The entrance is expected to be closed to public access for four weeks.

While this entrance is closed, riders will still have access to other entrances at Civic Center Station. Entrances that will remain open during construction include Market and 8th streets as well as the entrance at the UN Plaza.

This work is part of the Market Street Escalators Renovation Project which will install and replace 41 escalators at Embarcadero, Montgomery, Powell, and Civic Center stations. Of the escalators to be replaced, 22 are street to concourse level and 18 connect concourse with station platforms. Additionally, a street level escalator at Civic Center Station will be relocated to the entrance closest to the Orpheum Theatre which currently has only stairs. The work is happening in coordination with the San Francisco Canopies project, which will bring 22 protective canopies to the entrances at BART’s four downtown San Francisco stations. The canopies will not only protect new escalators from the wear-and-tear of elements like rain and wind-swept debris, but they will provide an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed.
