BART awarded $1 million by US Dept. of Transportation for roadway safety improvements

BART received a $1 million award from US Department of Transportation's Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Program to develop a safety action plan to improve roadway safety at and around BART stations, including potential improvements to bike/pedestrian access our stations.

Through the SS4A Program award, BART will develop a safety action plan with the goal of identifying projects and investments to improve roadway safety at and around BART stations and the system overall. The projects and investments may range from potential improvements to access around our stations and increased train service to shift drivers to transit, thereby reducing fatalities on streets and roadways.

BART already is undergoing a transformational capital works program called Core Capacity to boost the number of trains we can run through the Transbay Tube. The program includes a new train control system, 306 additional new rail cars, new traction power substations to provide power to the tracks and a new rail car storage yard. Core Capacity is expected to up to 45% in additional capacity in BART's system by allowing BART to run more frequent and longer trains.

Earlier this week, the California State Transportation Agency awarded the program $250 million to continue Core Capacity Program's progress. https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2023/news20230131-0

BART is already taking action to improve safety and access into our stations. Through voter-approved Measure RR funds, we are in our second cycle of Safe Routes to BART Program to work with local agencies to complete station access programs.
