BART fares to increase July 1, 2022
On July 1, 2022, all BART fares will increase by 3.4% to keep up with the rising cost of providing safe and reliable service. This fare increase is well below the current rate of inflation and is part of the Board-approved Inflation-Based Fare Increase Program which has been in place since 2003 and offers passengers a predictable pattern of small fare adjustments over time at a rate below inflation.
The fare increase was originally scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2022 but was delayed by six months. BART increases fares at a rate less than inflation every-other year. The last fare increase occurred January 1, 2020.
The increase will add 15 cents to the average fare of $3.78. For example, a short trip from Downtown Berkeley to 19th St./Oakland would increase five cents while a longer trip such as from Antioch to Montgomery would increase by 30 cents.
View the new fare chart. BART’s Trip Planner and online Fare Calculator have been updated with the new fares. Riders can look up their new fare by selecting a date of July 1, 2022, or beyond. New fare chart decals will be posted at vending machines prior July 1.
Money from the fare increase goes towards our operating and capital budgets and funds train service, enhanced cleaning, additional police and unarmed safety staff presence, and capital projects such as purchasing new train cars. Read our two-year budget announcement.

Use Clipper on Your Phone
BART and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) encourage travelers to put a Clipper card on their mobile phones instead of obtaining plastic Clipper cards because global supply chain issues have depleted the inventory of plastic cards. Clipper is available for mobile phones through either Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Clipper will waive the standard $3 new-card fee for customers who choose either of the mobile options for their new cards. Adding a Clipper card to Google Pay, an Apple iPhone 8 or later or Apple Watch Series 3 or later is easy. Apple customers can add the card directly through Apple Wallet and load cash value with Apple Pay anytime, anywhere. Customers with Android system phones running Android 5 or later similarly can add the Clipper card directly through Google Pay and load cash value anytime, anywhere.
