BART closed the Market Street entrance at the corner of Market and 4th and Ellis on 9/11/2020 for escalator replacement. The entrance will remain closed into August 2021 while the new escalator is installed, tested and inspected by the State for a permit to operate.
While it is closed, the entrance directly across Market Street (south side) is open. One platform-level escalator inside the Powell Station is also being replaced at this time and is also projected to be completed in August 2021.
An elevator is available on the north side of Market Street at the corner of 4th and Market
At the same time as the escalators above, BART closed the Civic Center station entrance on the south side of Market Street at 7th Street was closed for escalator replacement (see map). This escalator work should also be completed by August 2021 and the entrance will reopen at that time.

Thank you for your patience as we work to accomplish this important escalator replacement project. As a reminder, per state code, street-level escalators can only be installed at locations where a canopy has been constructed.
For the remainder of 2021, all other escalator replacement installations will be performed on platform escalators inside downtown stations.
