Earthquake Safety Construction nears completion at Fruitvale Station
As part of BART’s systemwide Earthquake Safety Program, seismic retrofit work INSIDE the Fruitvale Station continues into its final stages of construction. Expect changing pedestrian access/pathway detours inside the station as construction crews work feverishly to complete seismic retrofit and return the station free of construction enclosures. Please plan additional time to travel inside the Station between the Concourse and Platform. Watch for flaggers wearing bright yellow construction vests; the construction team will make every effort to minimize inconveniences. Proceed around construction areas with caution and watch for signs with safety information and other notices. Periodically, you will see heavy equipment accessing the site such as scissor lifts, drill rigs, concrete pump/hose and trucks, and scaffolding/plywood enclosures/soft delineators. Earthquake Safety construction at Fruitvale Station is expected to be complete this Spring, with work inside the Concourse expected to be complete within the next 4-6 weeks. Parking machines, escalators, stairs, elevators, and restrooms will remain open during construction. Periodic nighttime work activity may be needed.
Seismic retrofit construction consists of work on each footing and pier cap (a beam connecting two columns), which supports the BART trackway under the alignment. This construction requires activity that will make noise. Noise, dust, and odors will be monitored, and local regulations will be enforced to minimize any inconveniences. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and cooperation during this work. As always, safety is BART’s top priority. Our aim is to complete seismic retrofit work as quickly as possible, while maintaining BART service. Fruitvale Station will REMAIN OPEN for BART riders during construction.
Outside the station (south-end) on both sides of 35th Avenue, work continues and is nearing completion. Temporary closure of six (6) parking spots in the BART fee lot will remain in effect for now. Please note that vehicles parked where “No Parking” signs are posted will be subject to ticketing and/or towing. On the north-end of the Station, between the main entrance (fare gates) and the high-rise parking structure, seismic retrofit construction continues and will be complete this Spring.
