5/3 Update on effort to repair Walnut Creek Station elevators

5/3 Update: The elevators at Walnut Creek have been restored back into service. Thank you for your patience.

4/30 Update: The hydraulic lines have been replaced and we are waiting for a State Certification Inspector--the State is aware of the urgency to return the elevators to service and we expect that the inspection should be completed this week. Thank you for your patience.

BART is moving forward with major repairs to both elevators at the Walnut Creek Station.  Those elevators have been out of service since mid-March due to a failure of the underground hydraulic oil supply lines.  As BART crews began repair work, they discovered additional leaks that are likely due to the age and condition of the pipe.  All efforts to make temporary repairs to return the elevators to service have not been successful.  The only answer is a permanent repair that includes the replacement of both hydraulic oil supply lines with new above ground lines.  This replacement work along with the state inspection and certification is expected to take four weeks.

If you require an elevator to access the Walnut Creek Station, below are the suggested weekday alternatives while the elevators are out of service.  For late night weekday service and on weekends, please see Elevator Mitigation Alternative below.

If your destination is Walnut Creek:

Travel to Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre station, even if it is in the opposite direction of travel and exit the station.  Take the County Connection bus Route 9 or Route 14 back to Walnut Creek.  The maximum wait time should be 17 minutes.  The average drive time on the bus between the Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek Stations is 12 minutes.  Mention to the bus driver that you are a BART passenger who needs a ride due to the elevator outage and you will not need to pay the bus fare.

If you are starting at Walnut Creek and want to go to any other BART station:

Take the County Connection bus Route 9 or Route 14 to Pleasant Hill BART, even if it is in the opposite direction of travel.

Elevator Mitigation Alternative:

If the above options do not work for you for any reason or if you are seeking to travel on a weekend or after 10:15 pm on a weekday, you may request an “elevator mitigation” trip from the Station Agent.  The Station Agent will request an accessible vehicle to transport you to the adjacent station.  Wait times to dispatch a vehicle to your location may vary based upon driver availability and traffic.

We apologize for this inconvenience.  We will continue to work as quickly as possible to return the elevators to service and we will keep you updated on our progress.
