Extra patrols and alert rider help nab car break-in suspect

An auto burglary suspect allegedly responsible for five break-ins at the MacArthur Station parking lot yesterday is in custody thanks to an alert customer who reported suspicious activity to a nearby BART Police officer.

At 1:50 p.m. yesterday, December 7, 2017, a customer noticed a man smashing windows and pulling car door handles inside the MacArthur Station parking lot. The customer flagged down a nearby BART Police officer who swiftly responded and detained 27-year-old Andrew Friedman of Oakland (photo below). He was booked into Alameda County jail for burglary. Police say it was determined Friedman had broken into five vehicles yesterday.

The stolen property was returned to victims.

BART Police reminds riders to always lock car doors and to never leave anything visible inside a parked car.   We also encourage our riders to report suspicious activity to a BART employee or with the free BART Watch App.
