Take BART to Sunday Streets in San Francisco on July 19

The next in the series of car-free "Sunday Streets" events takes place Sunday, July 19, in San Francisco’s Mission District. The central gathering point will be Garfield Square Park, at 26th and Harrison Street, nearby the 24th Street BART Station. Take BART to Sunday Streets and you won’t have to deal with traffic and parking hassles.

The idea of Sunday Streets is to take streets full of cars and turn them into streets full of people, by getting people out of their cars and giving them a new perspective on different parts of the community. Certain areas of a neighborhood route are closed off to vehicle traffic to make room for lots of fun, free activities. It’s an opportunity to "get acquainted with a neighborhood" you might never have seen up close, says Alex Trembath of the Mayor’s Office of Climate Protection Initiatives, who serves as Electronic Outreach Coordinator for Sunday Streets.  You can find more information about Sunday Streets including a route map at the event's official website, www.sundaystreetssf.com

Sunday Streets also has a Facebook page and a Twitter feed.

The July 19th event will feature many activities that have been popular at previous events, including free bike rentals from Bike & Roll, information and maintenance from "Lube Fairies," free skating lessons and roller-skate rentals for the first 100 people, a Bookmobile from the San Francisco Public Library, and demonstrations of dances such as salsa, belly dancing and flamenco. There will also be many activities for kids, such as an obstacle course, yoga and bike programs presented by organizations including the Mission YMCA.

Don’t just sit there and wonder what to do this Sunday… jump on BART and head toward San Francisco for Sunday Streets! To plan your trip, use the BART QuickPlanner.

There are two more Sunday Streets events planned for this summer, both along the Great Highway:

Sunday, August 9, and Sunday, Sept. 6:  Great Highway
Bike, walk and play next to the Pacific Ocean. Travel from Golden Gate Park to the San Francisco Zoo, along Ocean Beach. 10am-2pm.
