BART to host commemoration of Oakland/Berkeley firestorm

15th anniversary of firestorm will be marked Saturday, October 21 at Rockridge Station

BART and the cities of Oakland and Berkeley will mark the 15th anniversary of the 1991 Oakland/Berkeley firestorm with a commemoration at the Rockridge BART Station on Saturday, October 21, 2006.

The heroic battle against the firestorm and the tragic losses suffered by the victims will be remembered during a poignant commemoration at the Memorial Tile Wall (across College Avenue from the Station).

Preventing future wildfires and prevention steps taken since 1991 will also be a major focus of the day. More than 25 community wildfire prevention partners will be present, with more than a dozen fire engines, emergency vehicles and urban rescue units on display for interaction with the public.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Main ceremony at Noon
WHO: BART Director Bob Franklin, Fire Chiefs from Oakland, Berkeley, East Bay Regional Parks and officials from Governor's Office of Emergency Services as well as Berkeley and Oakland city representatives.
