EZ Rider Parking Transition

This fall, BART will move forward with the planned sunsetting of the EZ Rider Parking program. The software and machines supporting the EZ Rider parking program have reached the end of their useful life and are not compatible with the next generation of Clipper, necessitating the end of the program.

Starting July 1, 2024, BART will begin to disable the EZ Rider Parking Validation Machines (PVMs) in phases and existing EZ Rider customers will not be able to tap their Clipper Card to pay for Daily Fee parking. A tentative phasing schedule is provided below and will be updated as PVMs are officially shutdown.

Customers are encouraged to transition to Tap and Go on the BART Official App, a new feature that allows for parking payment with one tap from the app home screen. No hangtags or stall numbers needed. EZ Rider customers can transition in two easy steps:

  1. Close your EZ Rider account. Log into ezrider.bart.gov, make sure your credit/debit card information is up to date, and close your account. A refund will be issued to the credit/debit card on file. Step-by-step EZ Rider account closure guide is available here.
  2. Register for Tap and Go on the BART Official App. Download the BART Official app, create an account with a new username and password, and register for Tap and Go under Daily Fee Parking. No hangtags or stall numbers needed. Pay for parking with one tap on the app. Step-by-step Tap and Go set-up guide here.

Existing EZ Rider customers may also choose to pay for Daily Fee parking as needed on the BART Official App without enrolling in Tap and Go or pay for Daily Fee parking at the machines in station using credit, debit, or cash (stall number required).

To receive a refund for your remaining EZ Rider balance or view your parking history, please visit ezrider.bart.gov. This fall, your data will be migrated to a new system. You will still be able to view your history and request a refund (by check only) but may experience delays.

Under California Codes 50050-50051, if you do not request a refund for your balance by January 2028, your balance will be considered unclaimed property and funds will be transferred to BART’s general fund.

FAQs

1. Why is EZ Rider ending?

The EZ Rider Parking program started in October 2008 as a convenient way for customers to pay for parking and transit. Unfortunately, these machines and software are now nearly 20 years old. The machines are not compatible with the next generation of Clipper, and unfortunately the software and equipment are not supported.

Ending the EZ Rider parking program will simplify various parking payment options at BART, thereby improving the customer experience for new riders looking into parking payment. In the past few years, BART has developed parking payment options on the BART Official App, including Tap and Go Parking, which provides benefits that were previous pain points in the EZ Rider program:

  • Riders who use Tap and Go have a smaller purse requirement compared to EZ Rider ($25 on Tap and Go, compared to $60+ on EZ Rider). Riders may also pay for Daily Fee parking as they need without enrolling in Tap and Go.
  • Riders will no longer need to use hangtags or move hangtags between multiple cars. With the app, parking payment is license-plate based, and riders may add up to 5 license plates on their account.
  • Riders have more payment method options on the BART Official app. In addition to credit and debit, riders may also pay with PayPal or Venmo.

2. Will I be able to tap my Clipper Card inside the station to pay for parking?

At this time, there is no plan to allow tapping inside the station to pay for parking. Note: You do not need to tap anywhere inside the station when you sign up for Tap and Go on the BART Official App, you will just tap “PAY” on the app home screen.

3. How do I close my EZ Rider account?

Here is a step-by-step guide which shows how to close your EZ Rider account and receive your refund. BART needs a valid credit or debit card to process your refund.

4. How do I receive my refund if my payment information on file is expired?

7. What if I have a negative balance in my EZ Rider account?

If you have a negative balance and wish to close your account, contact us by emailing [email protected].

8. What do I do with my EZ Rider hangtag?

9. How do I pay for parking without EZ Rider?

Download the BART Official App and create an account. We encourage you to try Tap and Go, a feature on the BART Official App, that allows you to pay for parking with one tap from the app home screen. Or you can also pay for Daily Fee parking.

If you do not wish to download an app, you can pay for Daily Fee parking at the parking machines using credit, debit, or cash. You will need to remember your stall number to enter at the machines.

10. What is Tap and Go?

Tap and Go is a feature on the BART Official App that allows you to pay for parking with one tap from the app home screen. It requires a one-time set-up, and provides a seamless, convenient experience for customers.

11. How do I enable Tap and Go?

Here is a step-by-step guide which shows how to enable Tap and Go Parking. Tap and Go can be enabled between 4am - 3pm only.

12. How do I load my parking wallet?

13. What is the difference between Tap and Go and Daily Fee parking?

Tap and Go is a feature on the BART Official App that allows you to pay for Daily Fee parking with one tap on the home screen; it is the quickest way to pay for parking and requires a parking wallet. You may also pay for Daily Fee parking as you go without enrolling in Tap and Go by selecting Daily Fee parking on the app, which supports both a single (one-time) payment and parking wallet payment.

14. Do I need a hangtag for Tap and Go?
