Rebuilt escalators now open at Embarcadero and Montgomery St. stations

[Article updated 11:30am, July 12, 2023 to reflect the opening of the Embarcadero Station escalator]

A third completely rebuilt escalator has reopened to the public at Montgomery Street Station. Crews completed work on an escalator that connects the western platform to the concourse level on June 16, 2023. Crews plan to start construction at the fourth escalator that connects the center platform to the concourse level on June 26, 2023.

A platform escalator at Embarcadero Station is the next rebuilt escalator expected to re-open, currently scheduled to return to service in late June or early July. Crews plan to start construction at the second escalator that connects the western platform to the concourse level after that.

Work continues to rebuild two other escalators, one at Powell Street and another at Civic Center.

It’s all part of BART’s ambitious project to rebuild 40 escalators and add one new unit at four downtown San Francisco stations.

BART is replacing the most troublesome escalators in its system in the downtown San Francisco stations in conjunction with a project to create canopies over the entrances, dramatically improving the traveler experience along the Market Street corridor.
