BART’s Fire Life Safety program wins top award for rail safety

On Tuesday, June 13, BART’s Fire Life Safety program was awarded the highest honor for rail safety, the 2023 APTA Rail Safety Gold Award, administered by the American Public Transportation Association.

The award recognizes transportation providers for “their innovative and proactive safety and security programs” that “help to build the industry by benchmarking successful initiatives so other systems can implement and finetune their programs.” Thomas Moloney, Director of Fire Life Safety at BART, accepted the award at a ceremony held during the 2023 APTA Rail Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Nominations were evaluated on four criteria: effectiveness, benefit level, innovation, and transferability. The top honor is the Gold Award, which is presented to organizations with the best example of a safety, security, or emergency management program.

“These awards highlight the dedication and hard work of individuals and organizations that strive to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers, employees, and the communities they serve,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “I want to congratulate the public transit agencies being honored today for their exceptional achievements in safety, security and emergency management, and for being an inspiration to others in the industry.”
