West Oakland Station elevators closing temporarily for earthquake safety work
Dear Customer:
As part of our systemwide Earthquake Safety Program, work is in progress to strengthen West Oakland Station against earthquakes. We will need to close both elevators temporarily at different times. In addition, we will install temporary stairs to allow passengers to detour around construction areas safely.
Temporary Elevator Closures:
Due to the location of work areas inside West Oakland Station, we will be temporarily closing the station elevators, one at a time, for three months each.Beginning Monday, October 11, 2010, the elevator at Platform 2 (servicing all trains with destinations in the East Bay) will be closed for approximately three months. After work around the Platform 2 elevator is complete, we will return it to full service and close the elevator at Platform 1 (servicing all trains bound for San Francisco, Daly City and Millbrae) for approximately three months.
If you require the use of an elevator, proceed to the Lake Merritt BART station, cross to the opposite platform and board a train to return back to the West Oakland Station to arrive on the opposite platform with a working elevator. If for some reason this doesn’t work for you, contact the Station Agent for help. Provisional Paratransit services are available during these elevator closures for qualifying individuals. Temporary Stairs:
Starting Friday, October 8, 2010, construction crews will install temporary stairs between the platform level and the ground level inside the station. Stairs will be constructed around the work areas, and pedestrian access in the station will change periodically. Please proceed around construction areas with caution and watch for signs with safety information and other notices. You can expect temporary construction-related noise, dust and delays when passing through the station. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this construction.
