New Stairs to be Added to Civic Center Station Starting the Week of 2/17

As part of our Measure RR system improvements, we will be adding two additional staircases to Civic Center/UN Plaza Station at both ends of the station. The staircases will be “scissored” with the existing staircases at the north and south ends of the station to create an interlocking structure that matches the current stairs. The existing staircases will remain open during construction.

In order to do the work required to accommodate the new staircase, we will need to construct an overhead barrier and temporary barricades around the existing staircase on each level of the station including the SFMTA platform. This is required to keep our customers and the workers safe during the project. As is the current condition, there will be no access to the SFMTA platform from these stairs.

The new staircase will be built offsite and sections of the staircase will be brought into the station after service hours on a flatbed train car. The sections will be installed outside of revenue hours. The work will also include new overhead and handrail lighting.

The temporary barricades are planned to be built starting the week of February 17 with stair prep and installation soon thereafter. The work should take approximately 12 months and we will provide updates on bart.gov if the date changes significantly.
