Civic Center Station stairwell now expected to be closed until end of June

On March 28, 2011, contractors closed one stairwell at Civic Center/UN Plaza Station. The project has experienced some delays and is now projected to be finished at the end of June. The contractors closed the stairwell at 8th and Market (near the Hotel Whitcomb) to replace a granite wall with stainless steel railing. This work is being done at the request of the City of San Francisco. The contractor now expects to finish the project by the end of June, 2011.

The contractor has erected temporary chain link fences and temporary lighting. Passengers will continue to need to use other stairwells or escalators to access our system. The steel railing replacement project is part of the City and County of San Francisco’s Civic Center enhancement program.

Although the City and County of San Francisco has made the decision to implement this construction project, we apologize for any inconvenience this project may cause to our passengers.
