Major Earthquake Safety Program Construction Work in Progress

As part of our ongoing system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, construction work has begun in stations and other patron areas. Over the next five years, you will encounter work at various locations throughout the BART system. We appreciate your patience during this work, and will attempt to minimize construction-related noise, dust, and inconvenience. We anticipate completion of all earthquake upgrades by 2014.

West Oakland Station Earthquake Upgrade Construction Informational Meeting to Held Wednesday, November 19, 2008

BART held an informational meeting about earthquake upgrade construction planned for the West Oakland BART Station. Construction is expected to begin in early 2009. The public was invited to come learn about the work, and BART staff was available to answer questions about the earthquake upgrade work.

Informational Meeting on Ohlone Greenway Temporary Detours Held Tuesday, December 18, 2007
On Tuesday, December 18, 2007, BART hosted an informational meeting for users of the Ohlone Greenway pedestrian and bicycle path. The purpose of the meeting was to present proposed temporary detour routes needed during construction of earthquake safety upgrades of BART's elevated structures expected to begin in mid-2009.

Earthquake Safety Program Soil Investigations

Measure AA: BART Earthquake Safety Bond

On November 2, 2004 voters in Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco Counties approved Measure AA, the BART Earthquake Safety Bond. Measure AA will fund up to $980 million of the $1.3 billion project budget to strengthen the original BART system, protect public safety, return BART service quickly and avoid gridlock after a major earthquake. The bonds will be paid from proceeds of property tax estimated to average $7.04 annually per $100,000 of assessed value.
